Welcome
In October 2002 we learned that our eldest daughter was cutting herself. We didn't understand and didn't know if we were to blame. Why, we asked ourselves, she was doing it and how we could help her? Were we bad parents?
We didn't know what to do.
At first, we kept it secret and didn't dare tell anyone, in case it made things worse. We imagined Social Services taking our children away from us, thinking we had done something wrong and were to blame. We also tried to handle it on our own but realised after a couple of weeks there was no escaping the fact we needed outside help.
So we talked to our GP. He was very understanding and arranged counselling for our daughter and, later, sessions with a child and adolescent psychologist.
What we also discovered was that although we could find help for our daughter, there was almost no support for us.
My Daughter
Submitted by Tjkem on Mon, 2008-03-17 19:29.My Daughter cuts herself when she feels she can't cope anymore and I feel that there is nothing I can do to protect her from her pain and it makes me feel useless and unbearably sad.
She has been bullied at school for over 3 years now and it is one of the main reasons why she self-harms. One of the other reasons, I think, is her lack of relationship with her Father since we divorced 6 years ago.
